Change, isn't it?
(Just random thoughts from me, it's been just spiritual journey of me, after being in that mountain peak)
Alhamdulillah, everything for me just have been great friend, although probably other people think it isn’t.
Well, I have pretty much the same situation friend. I hadn’t really been closed with my hostsiblings, except my big hostbrother, which is in college now.
Here, I just wanna share my opinion about this kind of problem, and other problems you might have, because it is pretty much the same with what I have, and Alhamdulillah I have already overcome it. So, I’m not pushing you to do what I told you, but it just some suggestion from a friend..:D
Any way, first of all, I believe that talking to your hostparents and your liaison will be useful. I don’t know if you had talked with them or no, but if you hadn’t, it might be great if you try to tell this problems.
From my point of view, friend, your (and my) problems are just a matter of mindset. My dear friend, when I faced this problem couple months ago, I was like you, frustrated, and just desperate, hate myself for couldn’t even do anything for my friendship, my hostfamilies, and my progress of success here. But then, one light enlighten my way. You know what is that, friend.
Yes, it was Allah, the true and the Almighty God of all His creation.
I know it’s hard, and I know you probably have been hearing this ‘motivational’ thing like hundreds times. But believe me, Friend, QONA’AH and TAWAKAL is the ultimate power of happiness. The key point of our problem is we feel that we failed, right? We feel that we cannot do what we supposed to do, we feel that the things that happen are not the things that supposed to do happen, and we feel we are a loser compared to other friend/fellows exchange students who made it to great experiences.
Now there is one way to erase all that up. One word, Friend, one word. HAPPINESS. Get it, no matter whatever happen to you. Get.It.
And fortunately Allah has already gave us the way to get it all the time, Prophet Muhammad Saw has already taught us how to do it. Yes it is. It is QONA’AH and TAWAKAL.
When we keep that characteristics in our thought, you know, everything are just beautiful in this world.
CHANGE OUR MINDSET, that’s the point of this two mighty way. Dear friend, still, we gotta do the best work we can do to overcome the problem. After all, we know that we have already done our best. Allah likes hardworker, Allah knows everything we’ve done, Friend. He appreciates it. He truly does.
Then friend, by seeing all everything in this world as the gift from Allah, everything will be meaningful, even if we don’t think so. Why? Yes, you know it. Because everything Allah give to us, are the best for us. Not for everyone, Friend, for you, alone. Just you.
Remember QS Al Baqarah 216
“..But it is possible that you dislike a thing which is good for you, and that you love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knows, and you know not.(QS Al Baqarah 216)”
We are all unique, and Allah knows us personally. He really does. Allah knows what good for me, and it might be not good for you. He knows these things, guys.
Finally, it isn’t our goal to be really good at friendship here, to have many friends, it isn’t our goal to be close to our hostsibling, it isn’t our goal to be overloved by our hostfamily. It isn’t even our goal to make the peace world, actually. The real goal for us, you know what friend?
It is a duty for us to make a contribution to the world, to people around us. Whatever way we want. We might think big about make a peace world, bridging two cultures. But in my opinion, friend, it just simply about what we can do for the world. It is wide, really wide range of things, friend. And some of them, is presentating about our culture, building a good relationship with our friends, and hostfamilies, just like what we thought our goal are. Its just actually some of million ways to achieve our goal.
But the thing is, those AREN’T the ONLY way. Whatever way you believe you will do, are doing, or you have done it, then you’re successful. Every way you can think friend, every way. Every way you can contribute to your communities, either in USA or Indonesia.
I truly changed my mindset this way couple months ago, dear friend. And you may believe it or not, but it really does work. There is no sad in my list of words again, now. I’ve done even more contribution to build our “big” goal : world peace. Now almost everyday I tell people what Islam truly is, what Indonesia truly is, without even planning on it. It is really random, informal and casual. I did even more service project, helping other people. It doesn’t even related to Islam or Indonesia. It just me, contributing to the communities, to the world. We have to make improvement of ourself also guys, that’s why they said in orientation, that YES program also emphasizing in leadership. It is not only from us for the world, but from world for us, also. We have to learn from the world also, guys.
And just like planting rice and it’s relation to grass, friend. As I am doing that, everything else is just starting to go the way it supposed to does. More friends, close friends, better relationship to hostsiblings and hostfamilies, and it just happiness everywhere for me.
Everything just come from Allah, Friend. Just from Him. Allah The Almighty. If we believe in him, believe what he decide for us, then he will give us the prizes. The ultimate prizes we didn’t even think about.
Now it’s your turn, Friend. Whatever way you want to do it, i’m sure you know how to get it.
Sincerely,
Miss you all, my best friends, AFS/YES Sigulempong ‘52 and SMADA Madiun
